Bulk e mailing is normally, as its description says, the mass marketing via e mail to all the customers listed on a company’s data base. These companies could be a superstore, or a large insurance company.

What happens is that when you as an individual sign up to a service like a cellular telephone contract you give the company full rights to contact you in regard to news, price increases and similar items of interest. Now generally this is actually a good thing as we are more likely to notice a SMS or e mail than to wait to find out news from normal mail.

The advantage is in the interest of both parties, and only becomes a problem if mishandled or abused.

I am personally on the SMS and e mail lists of quite a few companies and I am happy to find out that they are running a sale or specials on an item. How many times have you asked a company why they simply did not let you know something that you thought was important?

You go off to your local dentist only to find that he has moved – now if you had been on an emailing system with that business you could have been informed by email.

Now naturally the bulk emailing also allows the company to be able to use those lists to do direct marketing and this is still a great idea. We live in an age of direct messaging, and being able to contact friends and family instantly all around the world. Why not get the marketing of the very products that you use sent directly to your cellular phone or laptop via sms or a bulk e mailing system?

What the companies that plans to use this bulk marketing method need to do is to apply very clever methods that will keep all the people that are on the receiving end of their marketing happy and not ever put themselves into a situation where you are in fact irritating your very market that you are targeting.

How stupid is the company that starts to use silly or heavy handed methods in their bulk marketing campaigns and then starts to alienate their own customers? Please be very careful there.

Naturally different businesses would be approaching their marketing in different ways, and remember that the customers are expecting this. Gimmicks and fads do work, but you will always need to remember that generally you “database” is expecting you to behave in a certain way that has been proven to work over time.

All I would like to say here at the end is this… The cost that is often associated directly to this form of bulk e mail marketing is very often very economical. I know that this sounds like a sort of throw away comment, but if you sat down and calculated the expenses related to old fashioned methods of marketing, and realized how broad and un targeted those efforts were you will very soon realize the power of being able to talk directly to a very targeted buying market.
